Organization
U.S. Masters Swimming is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes health, wellness, fitness and competition for adults through swimming. USMS provides membership benefits to Masters swimmers nationwide, including insurance, organized workouts, sanctioned events, clinics, certification courses, SWIMMER magazine, and more. Programs are open to all swimmers ages 18 and up who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming.
Founded in 1970, USMS today has over 58,000 members and 1,200 clubs and workout groups in 51 regions throughout the country. Contrary to popular belief, most USMS members are not competitive; about 30 percent of the membership participates in pool or open-water competitions.
USMS is divided into eight zones across the country, which are further divided into Local Masters Swimming Committees (regional governing bodies) that administer local programs and services. The Colonies Zone consists of 10 LMSCs covering the mid-Atlantic and northeast states.
